1834 N-3 R1 PCGS graded MS65RB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Large 8, Small Stars, Medium Letters. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown, more than a third of the original color remaining. No significant distractions on either side, only a few tiny splashes of slightly darker toning, including two well hidden at ERT in LIBERTY and another at the dentils under star 11. A small, shallow depression in the field off the tip of the nose appears to be a pre-striking planchet void rather than a contact mark. MDS with a die crack passing through stars 12 & 13 to the dentils at either end. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees CW. Called MS70- and finest known in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#8. Now that's a big spread! Our grade is MS64. PCGS Population 1; none finer.

A thin nick left of star 5 is the only notable mark. Great eye appeal for a normal example of the variety, but this one is very special thanks to the extra raised stars clearly visible on the obverse rim from above star 4 to above star 9. 1835 N-8 R1 PCGS graded MS64RB. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Head of 1836. Highly lustrous and very attractive frosty bluish steel brown and light olive with faded mint color covering the protected areas on both sides, at least 20% of the surface displaying some of the faded red. There is a shallow low spot on the neck (caused by debris on the die) and a dull nick just left of the low spot. Otherwise this cent is virtually flawless and the satiny luster offers outstanding eye appeal. MDS with the usual die crack passing up the right side of the 1 in the date and through the portrait to star 8 where it fades out (identical state as the preceding lot). Called MS70- and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS65 and tied for CC#1, his photo #21785. Our grade is MS64+, close to MS65. PCGS Population 2; 1 finer in 65RB.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1835 N-8 R1 PCGS graded AU58. PCGS graded AU-58. Head of 1836. Glossy medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty luster covers the protected areas on both sides. Just a few marks, including a spot of darker steel toning in the field under the chin, a diagonal nick over the N in ONE, and another over the E in CENT. Just a touch of rub on the highest points from mint state. A fine double profile (from die bounce) shows on the lips and chin while multiple profiles are visible on stars 1-7. What makes this piece so special is the die state. The die crack from the dentils along the right side of the 1 is very strong and the right side of that 1 is now joined to the crack by a tiny internal cud. The crack is very strong as it extends up the neck through the T in LIBERTY and through the left side of star 8 to the rim above. Another strong crack reaches from the left edge of the hair bun to the rim over star 9. The section between the cracks up from the head is starting to rise as a retained cud, clearest along the right side. This cent is not in the overall condition census for the variety, but it is the finest known of the terminal state by a wide margin in the Noyes census where he grades it AU55, his photo #21347. Our grade is AU55. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

Sharply struck EDS with the reverse die uncracked. Called AU55 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and CC#2, his photo #21833. Our grade is EF45. PCGS Population 1; none finer.

1835 N-9 R4 PCGS graded AU53. PCGS graded AU-53. Head of 1834 with Large 8 and Stars. Glossy light chocolate brown mixed with slightly darker chocolate toning on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth, but there are three old scratches on the obverse and two on the reverse. These are located high on the neck, along the dentil tips under star 3, above star 4, at EN in CENT, down from the O in ONE, and between the R & I in AMERICA. The scratches all blend perfectly into the attractive toning but they do catch your eye. M-LDS with a very strong die crack through the tops of ERIC to the rim at either end plus an extension up from between the E & R to the rim above. The section outside the crack is depressed as a sunken retained cud, strongest over the E. A rare intermediate die state, tied for finest of the state according to the Noyes census. Generous traces of faded mint red show in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and free of any notable marks. Early die state. The die crack from the browlock up toward star 6 is faint and reaches only up to even with the top of the coronet. In addition, the high grade of this example allows you to see that the E in CENT was first punched upside down with bold remnants of the inverted E clearly visible. Lot 334
1835 N-13 R4 MS60. MS-60. Head of 1834 with Small 8 and Stars. Mint red fading to bluish steel brown and light olive, about 25% of the original mint color remaining. There are a couple fine pinscratches that skip from the field before the neck across the bust tip with one fading out above the 3 in the date while the other reaches to near the dentils right of the 5. A couple tiny, far less visible scratches can be found in the field before the neck and under the right end of the line below CENT. Struck from the earliest state of the obverse die with needle-sharp repunching on the 5 in the date. The obverse of this cent looks every bit like a proof strike with smooth, reflective fields and extremely sharp dentils all the way around. The reverse, however, is the product of a worn die that was used in several previous marriages. It has wavy fields that are covered with radial flowlines that create attractive cartwheel luster rather than the mirror-like reflectivity found on this obverse. This cent is listed as a one-sided proof in the Denis Loring census of proof large cents with a grade of Proof/MS63 (obverse/reverse). Del Bland also considers this piece to be a one-sided proof, and his grade is Proof-60/MS60+. Walter Breen lists this piece as a one-sided proof in his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins 1722-1977, and it was cataloged as such when it was sold in the Floyd T. Starr sale conducted by Stack's in 1984. This is the only one-sided proof example of the variety listed by Breen, Loring, and Bland. Both sides are plated in the Newcomb book and in Wayte Raymond's Standard Catalog. PCGS would not grade this cent because of the scratches. Too bad about the scratches, but this is still a remarkable, very significant cent that comes with an impressive provenance. Our grade is Proof-60 obverse, MS62 reverse.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
